On Friday, August 2, moving vans pulled up to 1435 Grove Way in Hayward. After 46 years of operating SOS/ Meals on Wheels out of an old church kitchen, a new era has begun. The trucks made the short journey north and east to Polvorosa Drive in San Leandro, where our state-of-the- art new kitchen facility is located. After a hectic weekend of unpacking, over 1200 warm and nutritious meals were delivered to homebound seniors in Hayward, San Leandro, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo and Oakland on Monday morning, August 5th. On Polvorosa Drive we enjoy 5,000 square feet of efficient space with shiny stainless steel surfaces. Six stacked convection ovens sit next to a giant tilting kettle and a free standing braiser. The refrigerator and freezer are large walk-in spaces, accessible on both sides for easy loading-in when the delivery trucks arrive. And the giant chill-blaster occupies a corner of its own where it quickly and efficiently chills meals to the perfect temperature while preserving good taste and nutrition. Our new Meals on Wheels kitchen provides more meals for homebound seniors, an updated and safe environment for our staff and the ability to increase meal production to meet demand in the future. We are happy to be here.
